If you’ve had unprotected sex and are afraid of possibly being at risk for HIV, please go to the emergency room and ask about POST EXPOSURE PROPHYLAXIS.

Works for up to 48 - 72 hours after exposure to HIV.

It is commonly used in hospitals for medical professionals who may have been exposed through a patient’s bodily fluids, and hospitals can offer it to survivors of sexual assault.

Unlike the morning after pill, it is a cocktail of drugs taken several times a day for a month. You have to take every dose for it to be effective and very soon after possible exposure, and there is no research showing effectiveness outside of healthcare settings. It can have pretty serious side effects (and even healthcare workers are unable to finish it sometimes), which is why it isn’t offered more frequently.
